Questions about CANSkate can be directed to the MKSC CANSkate Team:
CANSkate is all about learning, moving and having fun on the ice! Skaters build confidence and new skills at their own pace, earning ribbons and badges as they go.

Skaters learn in groups based on age and skating ability.
It may take the first few weeks of a session to assess skaters and make adjustments so everyone is in the most appropriate group.
Every session starts with skaters moving together and getting ready for the lesson.
Circuits, music, games and activities create an active learning environment with plenty of time spent skating.
Please stay in the arena throughout your child’s lesson.
If your child needs to leave the ice for the washroom, skate adjustment or another reason, a Coach or Program Assistant will bring them to the rink gate. Coaches and PAs cannot leave the ice.

Lace-up skates that fit snugly and provide good ankle support are recommended. Velcro-style skates are not recommended.
Skates should be sharpened regularly. MKSC recommends sharpening after approximately 30 hours of use.
Dress in comfortable, warm layers that allow plenty of movement.
And don’t forget the mittens!

Sessions are led by professional coaches.
Our trained Program Assistants (PA) work alongside professional coaches to help lead groups and support skaters on the ice.
PAs remain on the ice during sessions and are not available to accompany children to the washroom.

Every skater progresses at their own pace.
Coaches assess skaters regularly throughout the season to track skill development and make sure they are working at the right level.
Progress reports are emailed twice each year so families can see what their skater has achieved and what they are working toward next.
CANSkate skaters progress in three fundamental areas:
Balance:
Forward skating, edges and strong skating position.
Control:
Stopping, backward skating and speed control.
Agility:
Turning, jumping and changing direction.
Skaters earn ribbons as they complete skills in each area. Once all three areas are completed for a stage, they earn that Stage Badge.

CanSkate has six stages, and skaters progress at their own pace as their skills develop.
Stage 1 → Stage 2 → Stage 3 → Stage 4 → Stage 5 → Stage 6
A properly fitted CSA-approved hockey helmet is required until Stage 5 has been completed.
You don’t need to know your child’s CanSkate stage before registering.
Choose class based on your child’s age. Our coaches will assess their skating level during the first two weeks and place them with skaters of similar ability and age.
