PROGRAM ASSISTANTS

Helping our CANSkate program run smoothly, one smile, demonstration and helping hand at a time.

Meet the Program Assistants who keep CANSkate gliding.

Who Are Our Program Assistants?

Program Assistants, or PAs, are trained skaters who support our CanSkate coaches and help create a fun, safe and encouraging environment on the ice.

Qualified MKSC and non-MKSC skaters may apply.

Why Become a Program Assistant?

Being a Program Assistant is a great way to:

• Build leadership skills
• Earn volunteer credits (grade 9+) or club credits toward future registration
• Support the MKSC community
• Build confidence and responsibility on the ice
• Support younger skaters

What Do Program Assistants Do?

PAs work alongside CanSkate coaches to help lead groups, demonstrate skills, encourage skaters and keep sessions running smoothly.

They are expected to be friendly, reliable, engaged and ready to help.

QUALIFICATIONS

PAs may be MKSC skaters, but may also be former skaters or participants from other skating sports.

Age as of September 1

Intermediate/Senior skaters:
10 years and older

Junior 2 skaters:
12 years and older

Non-MKSC skaters

Skating ability will be assessed.

Great Program Assistants are:

• Eager and proactive in helping out

• Comfortable working with children

• Able to take direction from the CanSkate head coach and coaching team

• Reliable and committed to their responsibilities

• Ready to support the team and the skaters they are assigned to

All new Program Assistants need to complete 10 hours of on-ice training during CanSkate sessions before they begin earning volunteer or club credits.

MANDATORY PA CLINICS

Kick-Off + Training Clinic
September

Refresher PA Clinic

January

All new PAs must also complete 10 hours of on-ice training during CanSkate sessions before they begin earning volunteer or club credits.

Becoming a PA means making a commitment to the MKSC CanSkate team. Program Assistants are expected to be:

  • On time
  • Reliable
  • Responsible for their assigned sessions
  • Prepared to find a replacement if they are unable to attend

This is a volunteer leadership role. PAs are there to assist coaches and support CanSkaters, not to practise their own skating or socialize during sessions.

Applications are reviewed based on factors such as:

  • Age
  • Skating level
  • Experience
  • Availability

Successful applicants are invited to complete the required training.
