STARSkate
StarSkate offers opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of free skate, ice dance, skating skills, and artistic skating.
Unique in Canada, this program teaches figure skating skills in a group and/or private lesson format in a progressive and sequential manner and includes specifically designed awards and incentives. Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada Tests through a nationally standardized testing system.

WHAT IS STARSKATE?
FREE SKATE
Free skate consists of the execution of jumps, spins, footwork, field movements and stroking, either in isolation or performed in sequence to music.
SKATING SKILLS
Skating Skills are a combination of fundamental skating movements, executed on a pattern and skated solo. The basic components of all disciplines of figure skating are incorporated into the program. The movements are derived from former compulsory figures, free skating and ice dancing. The objective of the Skating Skills program is mastery of the basic fundamentals of skating – edge quality, control, power and speed.
ICE DANCE
Ice Dance teaches timing, musicality, rhythm interpretation, structure as well as basic skating skills such as edges, flow, control and unison.
ARTISTIC
The Artistic program encourages and develops skaters’ creativity, expression, musicality, movement, interpretation of music, as well as the use of space, rhythm, line and style. The program provides skaters with the opportunity to explore the performance aspect of skating. Technical elements include: field move sequence, choreographic step sequence and artistic spin.

STARSKATE LEVELS + SESSION PLACEMENT
STARSkate skaters are placed into Junior, Intermediate and Senior levels so skaters can train with others at a similar stage.
Placement is based on MKSC qualification points earned through Skate Canada assessments. Your Base Coach can help confirm which sessions are right for your skater.

PAYMENTS + CHANGES
Payment plans are available for STARSkate registration. Session changes, withdrawals and refunds are subject to MKSC policies and deadlines.
VOLUNTEERING
MKSC is volunteer-run. STARSkate families can help with music playing, Assessment Days, CanSkate, club events and other volunteer opportunities.
GUEST / OUT-OF-CLUB SKATING
Skaters registered with another Skate Canada home club may be able to skate on eligible MKSC sessions when space permits and approval is received.

Do I need a Base Coach before registering?
Yes. STARSkaters must hire an MKSC Base Coach before registration and should review session choices with that coach.
How do I know which sessions to register for?
Your Base Coach helps determine which sessions suit your skater’s level, how often they should skate, and which sessions the coach is available to teach.
What happens during a STARSkate session?
Sessions are typically 50–80 minutes and combine private, semi-private or small-group coaching with independent practice. Some longer sessions also include group stroking.
How do assessments work?
STAR 1–5 assessments generally happen in the skater’s normal training environment. STAR 6+ assessments are more formal and usually take place on Assessment Days with certified evaluators.
Can my skater make up a missed session?
No. Individual missed sessions cannot be swapped or made up on another day or time.
Do parents need to stay at the arena?
Parents/guardians of skaters under 12 are required to remain at the arena while their child is skating.
